An electric wheel chair
is a wheeled chair which moves with the help of electric power. It is used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible. There are different types of electric wheel chairs available in market. Cheap electric powered wheelchairs have light frames that are suitable for indoor use whereas high-priced electric wheelchairs are more rugged and reliable and thus can be used outdoors. The way that electric wheelchairs are propelled varies, and these different methods give different characteristics to the wheelchairs. The following are the three basic methods of propulsion:
- Rear Wheel Drive Wheelchairs: This is the most common method of drive for an electric wheelchair. They are generally faster then front-wheel models but provide poor turning capabilities in comparison to front-wheel and mid-wheel models.
- Front Wheel Drive Wheelchairs: They provide tighter tuning functions. Most front-wheel drive wheelchairs have a slightly lower top speed than rear-wheels.
- Mid Wheel Drive Wheelchairs: They provide the tightest turning of all, but have a tendency to be unsteady when stopping and starting.
